Travel Tips:

1. Weather and Packing:

  • Bogotá (Days 1 and 9): Bogotá’s cool and unpredictable weather calls for layers, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 19°C (50°F to 66°F). Pack a light jacket, long sleeves, and comfortable shoes. Bring a rain jacket or umbrella, just in case.

  • San Andrés Island (Days 2-4): Expect warm, tropical weather on San Andrés, with temperatures between 26°C and 30°C (79°F to 86°F). Pack lightweight, breathable clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, swimwear, and beach sandals. A wide-brimmed hat will also help protect you from the sun.

  • Santa Marta (Days 5-8): Santa Marta is hot and humid, with temperatures ranging from 24°C to 31°C (75°F to 88°F). Similar to San Andrés, pack light clothing, beachwear, and sun protection. Comfortable walking shoes are also recommended for exploring Tayrona National Park.

2. Health and Safety:

  • Mosquito Protection: In coastal regions like San Andrés and Santa Marta, mosquito bites can be a concern. Use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants, and stay in air-conditioned rooms or use mosquito nets.

  • Water: Stick to bottled or filtered water throughout your trip. Avoid drinking tap water, especially on San Andrés Island and Santa Marta, and use bottled water for brushing your teeth.

3. Altitude Considerations:

  • Bogotá: At 2,640 meters (8,660 feet) above sea level, Bogotá’s altitude may cause mild altitude sickness. Stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activities on your first day, and give your body time to acclimate.

4. Currency and Payments:

  • Cash: Colombian pesos (COP) are the local currency. While credit cards are accepted in larger cities and tourist areas, it’s a good idea to have cash on hand for smaller purchases, tips, and in more remote areas. ATMs are widely available.

  • Tipping: Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. For good service, consider tipping around 10% in restaurants. It’s also polite to tip guides and drivers after tours.

5. Transportation:

  • Domestic Flights: Ensure you arrive at the airport at least two hours before your domestic flights between Bogotá, San Andrés, and Santa Marta.

  • Local Transport: Taxis, rideshare services like Uber, and bike rentals are convenient options on San Andrés Island. In Santa Marta, taxis and local buses are widely available for transportation.

6. Cultural Etiquette:

  • General Etiquette: Colombians are friendly and hospitable. When meeting someone for the first time, a handshake is common. Friends may greet each other with a hug and a kiss on the cheek. When visiting religious sites, dress modestly and be respectful of local customs.

  • Beach Etiquette: When enjoying the beaches on San Andrés Island or Santa Marta, follow local guidelines, avoid leaving trash behind, and respect the environment.

7. Language:

  • Spanish: Spanish is the official language in Colombia. While English is spoken in some tourist areas, knowing basic Spanish phrases will enhance your experience, especially when interacting with locals on San Andrés Island and in Santa Marta.

8. Connectivity:

  • Internet and SIM Cards: Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels and cafes in Bogotá, San Andrés, and Santa Marta. For better coverage during your trip, consider purchasing a local SIM card, especially if you plan to explore more remote areas.  Buying a SIM card and data or minutes is very cheap in Colombia.

9. Safety Tips:

  • General Safety: Colombia is generally safe for tourists, but it’s important to stay vigilant. Stick to well-populated areas, avoid displaying valuables, and use reputable transportation services.

  • Beach Safety: Be cautious when swimming at the beach, as strong currents can be dangerous. Swim only in designated areas and follow local safety instructions.

10. Travel Insurance:

  • Comprehensive Coverage: Make sure your travel insurance covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost belongings. With a range of activities included in this itinerary, comprehensive coverage is essential.
