Travel Tips:

1. Weather and Packing:

  • Bogotá (Days 1, 14-15): Bogotá’s weather is cool and unpredictable due to its altitude. Expect temperatures from 10°C to 19°C (50°F to 66°F). Pack layers, including a light jacket, long sleeves, and comfortable walking shoes. A rain jacket or umbrella is essential.

  • Leticia (Days 2-5): Leticia is in the heart of the Amazon, where it’s hot, humid, and prone to heavy rain. Temperatures range from 23°C to 32°C (73°F to 90°F). Pack lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, insect repellent, sunscreen, and waterproof shoes. A poncho or rain jacket is a must for rainforest activities.

  • Armenia (Days 6-13): Armenia has a mild climate with temperatures between 17°C and 28°C (63°F to 82°F). Pack light clothing, comfortable shoes, and a rain jacket, especially for excursions.

2. Health and Safety:

  • Mosquito Protection: In Leticia, there is a risk of mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue and malaria. Use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants, and sleep under mosquito nets or in air-conditioned accommodations.

  • Water: Stick to bottled or filtered water, especially in Leticia. Avoid drinking tap water and use bottled water for brushing your teeth.

3. Altitude Considerations:

  • Bogotá: At 2,640 meters (8,660 feet) above sea level, you may experience mild altitude sickness. Stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activities on your first day, and give your body time to adjust.

4. Currency and Payments:

  • Cash: Colombian pesos (COP) are the local currency. While credit cards are widely accepted in cities like Bogotá and Armenia, Leticia and more rural areas may prefer cash. ATMs are available, but it’s a good idea to carry small bills for local markets and rural communities.

  • Tipping: Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. For good service, tip around 10% in restaurants. Consider tipping guides and drivers as well.

5. Transportation:

  • Domestic Flights: Flights between cities like Bogotá, Leticia, and Armenia are generally reliable, but plan to arrive at the airport at least two hours before departure.

  • Local Transport: In cities, taxis and rideshare services (Like Uber) are convenient and affordable. In rural areas like Leticia, transportation may involve boats or local guides.

6. Cultural Etiquette:

  • Indigenous Communities: When visiting indigenous communities in Leticia, be respectful of their traditions and customs. Ask for permission before taking photos and follow your guide’s instructions.

  • General Etiquette: Colombians are warm and hospitable. A handshake is common when meeting someone for the first time, and friends may greet each other with a hug and a kiss on the cheek.

7. Language:

  • Spanish: Spanish is the official language, and while English is spoken in tourist areas, knowing basic Spanish phrases will enhance your experience, especially in remote areas like Leticia.

8. Connectivity:

  • Internet and SIM Cards: Wi-Fi is widely available in Bogotá and Armenia, but connectivity may be limited in Leticia. Consider purchasing a local SIM card for better coverage during your trip.  Buying a SIM Card and data or minutes is very cheap in Colombia.

9. Safety Tips:

  • General Safety: While Colombia has made significant strides in improving safety, it’s still wise to be cautious. Stick to well-populated areas, avoid displaying valuables, and use reputable transportation services.

  • Amazon Safety: When exploring the Amazon, always follow your guide’s instructions. Be mindful of your surroundings, and do not wander off alone.

10. Travel Insurance:

  • Comprehensive Coverage: Ensure your travel insurance covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost belongings. Given the remote locations and variety of activities in this itinerary, comprehensive coverage is essential.
