Travel Tips:

1. Weather and Packing:

  • Bogotá (Days 1, 13-14): Bogotá is cool and unpredictable due to its altitude, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 19°C (50°F to 66°F). Pack layers, including a light jacket, long sleeves, and comfortable shoes. A rain jacket or umbrella is also recommended.

  • Cartagena (Days 2-5): Cartagena is hot and humid, with temperatures between 24°C and 31°C (75°F to 88°F). Pack lightweight, breathable clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and swimwear for your beach day at the Rosario Islands.

  • Santa Marta (Days 6-9): Santa Marta has a tropical climate, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F). Similar to Cartagena, pack light clothing, sunscreen, and swimwear for your visit to Tayrona National Park.

  • Cali (Days 10-12): Cali is warm and sunny, with temperatures ranging from 18°C to 30°C (64°F to 86°F). Light clothing, comfortable shoes, and sunscreen are essential, especially if you plan to explore the city’s vibrant streets and nightlife.

2. Health and Safety:

  • Mosquito Protection: Mosquitoes are present in coastal regions like Cartagena and Santa Marta, where there is a risk of dengue. Use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants, and sleep in air-conditioned rooms or under mosquito nets.

  • Water: Stick to bottled or filtered water throughout your trip. Avoid drinking tap water, especially in coastal areas, and use bottled water for brushing your teeth.

3. Altitude Considerations:

  • Bogotá: At 2,640 meters (8,660 feet) above sea level, you may experience mild altitude sickness. Stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activities on your first day, and take it easy while your body acclimates.

4. Currency and Payments:

  • Cash: Colombian pesos (COP) are the local currency. While credit cards are widely accepted in larger cities like Bogotá, Cartagena, and Cali, you may need cash for smaller purchases and tips. ATMs are available, but carry small bills for local markets and rural areas.

  • Tipping: Tipping is customary but not mandatory. For good service, tip around 10% in restaurants. It’s also polite to tip guides and drivers after tours.

5. Transportation:

  • Domestic Flights: Flights between cities like Bogotá, Cartagena, Santa Marta, and Cali are generally reliable, but plan to arrive at the airport at least two hours before departure.

  • Local Transport: In cities, taxis and rideshare services like Uber are convenient and affordable. In coastal towns like Santa Marta, local transportation may include buses and motorbike taxis.

6. Cultural Etiquette:

  • General Etiquette: Colombians are warm and welcoming. A handshake is common when meeting someone for the first time, and friends may greet each other with a hug and a kiss on the cheek. When visiting churches, dress modestly and be respectful of religious practices.

  • Tayrona National Park: When visiting Tayrona, be mindful of the natural environment. Take any trash with you, and avoid disturbing wildlife.

7. Language:

  • Spanish: Spanish is the official language, and while English is spoken in some tourist areas, knowing basic Spanish phrases will enhance your experience, especially in more remote locations.

8. Connectivity:

  • Internet and SIM Cards: Wi-Fi is widely available in cities like Bogotá, Cartagena, and Cali, but connectivity may be more limited in places like Tayrona National Park. Consider purchasing a local SIM card for better coverage during your trip.  Buying a SIM card and data or minutes is very cheap in Colombia.

9. Safety Tips:

  • General Safety: While Colombia has made great strides in improving safety, remain cautious. Stick to well-populated areas, avoid displaying valuables, and use reputable transportation services.

  • Beach Safety: Be cautious when swimming at the beach, as strong currents can be dangerous. Follow local advice and only swim in designated areas.

10. Travel Insurance:

  • Comprehensive Coverage: Ensure your travel insurance covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost belongings. Given the variety of activities in this itinerary, comprehensive coverage is essential.
